I won a disciplinary matter this week. The client was facing a 6 month suspension. The client felt that he hadn’t received a fair opportunity to defend against the alleged misconduct. That argument prevailed and the suspension was revoked.
By objective standards, it was not a very big case. But every case is important. First, this was the client’s only case – so it was objectively the biggest case he had. Second, small disciplinary sanctions can cause large collateral problems, such as the future denial of a job opportunity. That’s why professionals should jealously guard their reputations and seriously defend against disciplinary actions. The case may have seemed simple and relatively small, the win was big.
