It takes two to Tango. That’s what I tell clients who want to negotiate a quick settlement. The first step, and arguably the most important one, is getting into a negotiation to begin with. If you don’t have a “dance partner” then you are probably wasting your time. Moreover, it is generally a mistake to try to negotiate with an adversary who is not engaged in the negotiation. It can send the wrong message. In those situations, step back and wait for, or percolate, your next opportunity to get into a negotiation. And that’s the real key, finding a way to get the negotiation started in the best way to give yourself a chance of obtaining favorable terms. Don’t rush to start negotiating. Develop and implement a strategy. Then stick to, choosing your communications and actions wisely.
