Is Everything a Negotiation?

by | Jun 2, 2024 | Firm News |

Yes. Well not exactly. But more often than not, if you are so inclined, you can negotiate improved terms in virtually all aspects of your life. Negotiation isn’t always a zero sum game. Focus on win-win items. Also, negotiation does not need to be adversarial, and generally should not be. Be direct, polite and thoughtful. Show the other side that you understand their needs and problems, then explain your own. If you can get a dialog going, it won’t be long until you know whether there is an agreement to be had. If you are uncomfortable negotiating, practice how you will communicate. Don’t say, “the best I can do is $5 or $6.” That tells me two things, you are willing to pay $6 and you have no confidence. Clearly say, “I can do $5.”  Then be quiet and wait for the other side’s response. Look and listen. Be observant of the other side’s words and non-verbal cues. Are you in a negotiation yet?
